1. Job Purpose

Responsible for the validation, verification and overall quality of software used by a novel and rapid DNA profiling technology. This technology can be used to help with the early identification of individuals for exclusion or inclusion purposes in a wide range of markets, including law enforcement, counter terrorism and the military.

2. Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities


  • Work with the Product Development team to understand customer requirements and expectations

  • Clearly and concisely log defects and usability issues. In the case of defects, sufficient information should be provided for the problem to be easily reproduced

  • Review developer unit tests associated with newly implemented User Stories

  • Create additional unit tests where appropriate

  • Develop, manage and execute automated integration tests to assess and document differences in system accuracy between current and previous releases

  • Manage User Stories and Defects using an Agile planning tool

  • Formally release software to distributors and our manufacturing partner

  • Develop and document Test Cases and Release Notes

  • Perform system and installation testing

  • Assist in the planning process and provide estimates of test effort

  • Support the Field Application Scientists with upgrades and troubleshooting customer issues

  • Carry out performance testing

3. Role Dimensions

This is a permanent role with no direct reports. You will be working within a multidisciplinary Product Development team. In future, there may be an opportunity to manage the testing of additional software products elsewhere within the organisation, so some leadership or mentoring experience is advantageous.

5. Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills

Required Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills


  • Degree in a scientific or technical discipline

  • Proficient in unit, integration, system and acceptance testing

  • Experience in test automation using scripts or, preferably, C#

  • Minimum of 5 years software testing experience, ideally in a scientific domain

  • Experience of working in an Agile environment

  • Good understanding of software development methodologies

  • Preferred Knowledge, Experience and Technical Skills

  • Experience of automating tests using C# and .NET 3.5 or greater

  • Familiarity with TargetProcess or similar Agile planning tool

  • Interest in using science to solve real-world problems

  • ISEB/ISTQB qualification

  • Good understanding of Unit Test frameworks such as NUnit or MbUnit
